FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NATE BIRKEY RETURNS TO SANTA BARBARA

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

at SOhO

1221 State St. Santa Barbara

8:00p

Long-time Santa Barbara trumpeter/singer/songwriter, Nate Birkey will be returning for one night only, March 19 at Soho Restaurant and Music Club. Nate has been living in New York City for the past three and a half years, and this will be his first appearance in Santa Barbara since Fall of 2007.

Birkey has been busy on the New York scene, and with touring over the past several years, and has built a solid report with his New York based quintet. And at last, the group is preparing to go into the studio to record the next CD. It has been three years since Nate's last album release, Shortest Day, and he is anxious to have something new to share with his audience. The Quintet (East) includes some of the finest musicians from the NYC area - pianist Jim Ridl, drummer Marko Marcinko, and bassist Tony Marino, make up the core of the ensemble; with saxophonist Sal Giorgiani and guitarist Vic Juris rounding out the group. The group is scheduled to record the first week of April, and Birkey will be bringing some of his new material to Santa Barbara for a trial performance before heading into the studio.

For his SOhO show, Nate will be reunited with members of his west coast quintet, a group that has recorded four CDs and has played together for nearly 10 years. Los Lobos drummer Cougar Estrada will be back on Drums, with Jim Connolly at the bass, and the ever exciting Jamieson Trotter at the piano. Tom Buckner will round out the horn section on tenor saxophone.

"Make way for Nate Birkey, a talented trumpeter / vocalist / composer who has been honing his talents in the Santa Barbara jazz scene and is now getting the national exposure he deserves. Birkey's latest release, Shortest Day, recorded live in 2004, showcases his considerable gifts and puts him front and center among jazz' most promising musicians."
